Flower Fan Japanese Print after Kitagawa Utamaro | Framed and Matted Flower Fan Japanese Print after Kitagawa Utamaro |
---|---|
Original Japanese print in colors on tan paper after Kitagawa Utamaro. Titled Flower Fan, the image shows a courtesan named Flower Fan (Hanaogi) writing a letter to an admirer. The image is part of a series called “6 Famous Beauties”. This print was likely created in the late 1940’s after the original 18th century Kitagawa Utamaro woodblock print. The publishers stamp (Puo Omiya) is on the lower left of the image. Inspected prior to framing by an expert in Japanese art. He said the lack of baren marks on the back were strong evidence that it was printed from zinc plates as opposed to wood blocks. (There would be significantly more marks on the back from the baren if it was a woodblock print.)
