Original color offset lithograph on white wove paper after Pablo Picasso. From the portfolio Portraits Imaginaires (Imaginary Portraits). In 1969 Picasso received a shipment of painting supplies at his studio. The packing materials includes sheets of brown cardboard. Picasso painted a series of imaginary portraits in brightly colored gouache on the sheets of cardboard. Reknown lithographer Marcel Salinas later collaborated with Picasso to create lithograph plates from those gouache paintings. The lithograph even reproduces the texture of the cardboard in various shades of brown ink. (Since Salinas created the lithograph plates, this is technically an “after” Picasso.)
The portfolio was published in 1973 in a numbered edition. The pencil numbering is from the publisher. There is an American edition and a French edition, each limited to 250 impressions. The French edition include the letter “F” after the numbering. The American edition contains the letter “A” before the numbering. Total edition size (French and American) was 500.
